“Linux is a Unix clone writen from scratch by Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely - Knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims towards POSIX compliance.”
Linux adalah klon dari Unix, dan dirancang oleh para hacker (jago pemrograman) dari seluruh dunia lewat Net.
Linux = klon Unix dirancang para hacker.
Linux sering dikaitkan atau tidak terlepas dari istilah Free Software atau Open Source.
Filosofi dari open source seperti dibawah ini :
“The basic idea behind open source is very simple : When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems atonishing”
“We in the open source community have learned that this rapid evolutionary process produces better software than the traditional closed model, in which only a very few programmers can see the source and everybody else must blindly use an opaque block of bits.”
Komunitas open source berkeyakinan, bahwa teknologi yang dalam proses perkembangannya bersifat terbuka justru akan menghasilkan software yang lebih baik dari pada model tertutup. Jika terjadi bug (kesalahan pemrograman) dalam kasus close source maka hanya karyawan perusahan tersebut yang mengatasinya.
Berbeda dengan open source, suatu bug dapat ditemukan atau dibetulkan oleh siapa saja (komunitas) yang terlibat. Tidak mengherankan banyak sekali program-program yang berlisensi open source jauh lebih unggul dari program closes source komersial yang berharga puluhan juta sekalipun.
Dan……..Linux memenuhi kriteria open source diatas :)
